These are the BC teaching standards. These standards guide everything that I do as a teacher. These are the bare minimum of how I should act as a teacher in my classroom. I want to take these values as my base and grow from them to become an ethical and empowering educator. I want to remember my years of schooling and the importance of continued learning throughout my entire career. As the world evolves and changes we as educators have a responsibility to grow and learn with the world so that we can be the best we can be for our students.
My-Philosphy-StatementIn class I picked a quote that I identified with and wrote a few paragraphs about what it means to me in education. Through this assignment I learned how to deeply reflect on my feelings about education and what I value in a classroom.
Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie shares about the dangers of a single story in her ted talk. I felt like this was an important video to include because it impacted me as a person and an educator. I find in our Canadian privilege it is so easy to stereotype others. This is especially true when working with English language learners and immigrants in the school system. We all make judgements about other people based on the story we hear and we need to realize that there is never a single story. As educators we need to think about the stories that we share in our classroom and whose point of view is being represented. Having only one point of view represented can give students a narrow view of the world. Share many stories so that your students can see others as more then a stereotype.
I love this quote by Dr. O. Ivar Lovaas. I believe that we cannot teach the same way every year because our students have different needs and abilities every year. True inclusion requires adaption from the teacher. Some adaptions can include re arranging the space to accommodate for different styles of learners. This can happen through providing a calm corner, and using flexible seating. Other adaptions include changes in lesson plans to include more hands on learning, place based learning, and lesson visuals. As teachers we should be keeping up on the latest practices regarding inclusion and doing our best to implement them into our classroom.
